The Museum of Las Américas invites you to the new exhibition, “Pieles”, by the Puerto Rican artist Marsi Caraballo, and a “Family Sunday” full of activities.

Today, Thursday, at 6:00 pm, the opening of the exhibition will take place, which presents a series of hanging three-dimensional works, composed of circles of discarded paper, with which the artist carries a message of awareness about the recycling paper and other materials that would otherwise end up in the trash. Her work creates deconstructed images and color patterns on organically molded fabric that resembles scale-lined skin.

“With her work, the artist Marsi Caraballo aspires to send a significant message, in the face of the excesses and waste that result from a graphic everyday life that is distinctive of any consumerist society. ‘Skins’, through thousands of spheres made of recycled paper, creates surfaces that give the illusion of scales on a body and provoke a close look to discover what the layers of this skin consist of. Each scale is a reminder of awareness about the environment and the waste of printed materials,” commented Dr. Ana Rebecca Campos, curator of the exhibition.

The exhibition includes photographic images that represent the practical use of the pieces. There will also be presented a performance where the dancer and choreographer, Sorely Muentes, experiments with the sound and movement of paper circles.

Marsi Caraballo, a designer by profession, is a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico Campus in Río Piedras with a concentration in plastic arts and the Central School of Visual Arts of San Juan. She has exhibited in the United States and Puerto Rico. The exhibition will run until September 29, 2024 in Room 4 of the Museum.

Meanwhile, on June 30, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, the long-awaited “Family Sunday” will take place, a day full of activities for the enjoyment of the public of all ages. The program includes a weaving workshop with plants led by Gabriela Sánchez Deniza; a tour of the exhibition “Travesías / Crossings” with the teacher, Antonio Martorell, and the curator, Humberto Figueroa and the artist Imna Arroyo, as the grand closing of the exhibition.

At 3:00 pm the musical group Así Somos will perform with its varied repertoire of popular music.

That day, visitors can also enjoy the permanent exhibitions, “Popular Arts in the Americas,” “Santos de Palo de Puerto Rico,” the Alegría-Pons collection, and the recently inaugurated “El Indígena de Las Américas.”
