While in Europe the minivan segment is doomed to disappear, in China they occupy a privileged position in the market. In Chinese culture, personal space is a commodity that is as precious as it is scarce. With a more than evident overpopulation, more than 1,000 million inhabitants, it is difficult to find a space where you can be alone. That is why minivans provide a special service beyond simple transportation from point A to point B. BYD does not fight in that vital category, but it will soon correct its mistake. The Chinese are finalizing preparations to launch what will be their first minivan, which they have called BYD M6.
It must be admitted that this is not the first time we have seen it. Just a few days ago some spy photos revealed to us what the next job of those from Shenzhen would be, although it really hasn’t been like that. After discovering the new images intercepted by CarNewsChinaç, we can see that we are talking about two completely different models. The test unit intercepted a few days ago is very different in both shape and size. This is why it is shown that BYD is working on two separate minivans. At first glance you can see that the M6 is smaller. It will be the most familiar fleet access model.
A compact minivan powered by electric systems
The images show it completely uncovered by vinyl or camouflage protections. The commercial name can be clearly read on the license plate holder and all this makes us think that it has been intercepted during its official photo and video session. Its design is very reminiscent of other models from the house such as the Atto 3 or the Tang, although more reminiscent of the BYD Song Max. The Song Max was actually BYD’s first MPV, but in this case we can say that the M6 will be the company’s first NEV MPV. It is possible that it will be one of the first models to debut BYD’s recently introduced fifth-generation plug-in hybrid system.
The Chinese claim to have developed one of the most efficient mechanical systems in the world capable of obtaining a approved average consumption of 2.9 liters and a combined range of up to 2,100 kilometers (CLTC cycle). The BYD Seal 06 DM-i will be the first model to use it, but not the only one. BYD supports its future in 100% electric mechanics and hybrid systems. The latter have already arrived in Europe with the BYD Seal U, although it does not include the most modern version of all. As for the M6, it is expected to make exclusive use of an electric powertrain in order to compete with other models in the category. In fact, BYD already makes a NEV MPV, although it sells it under another brand. The Denza D9 will arrive in Europe next year.
That leaves the door open for the arrival of the BYD M6, although since China has not confirmed anything. As we said at the beginning, sales of the minivan segment have fallen considerably after the arrival of the most modern SUVs. And the offer from the electric segment is much less attractive. We expect BYD to make a statement shortly after releasing the M6, which will take place within a few weeks. Before that big moment we will know many of its details, as is customary after passing the trademarks through the official registry of the patent office.
