Due to the increase in the digitalization of systems and processes, there has at the same time been a growth in demand for high-quality, low-cost sensors that are capable of monitoring certain magnitudes in real time for making advance decisions, preventing the occurrence of a failure in the system and, therefore, act as preventive maintenance.

From the Energy Technological Institute (ITE) have launched the IMPULSE project to develop a graphene sensor for the manufacture of detectors that are capable of controlling different parameters of electronic devices related to the energy sector, such as gases or the temperatures of some batteries.

The project has requested support from the Conselleria d’Innovació, Indústria, Commerce i Turisme of the Generalitat Valenciana, through the IVACE, through financing by the European Union, through the FEDER Comunitat Valenciana 2021-2027 Program.

Pioneer project

Graphene is a low-energy and very economical material that is currently being implemented in different sectors and with different uses. Specifically, in this project different techniques for deposition of thin films of graphene material that will act as sensors will be evaluated, focusing the development on the technique that has the greatest projection for its implementation at an industrial level.

This is a pioneering project in the energy sector and one of the first real applications of this material. The final objective is the implementation of thin film placement processes in the development of sensors to improve the efficiency of processes and products in the energy and electrical sector.

This system will be validated on a prototype scale, in order to promote a process that is versatile for the manufacture of sensors for different applications in the energy and electrical sector for monitoring temperature, concentration of a polluting gas and other applications according to the demands of the sector.

“IMPULSE is a project with which we aim to help companies in the energy sector detect alterations in their devices using sensors created from a sheet of graphene. The idea is that, thanks to this project, companies have more information about their devices and can make decisions to avoid more serious problems,” explained Iván Esteve, project manager at ITE.
