Actor Matt Bomer revealed in a recent interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast that he was very close to playing Superman in a 2000 film that was never made. Although he was very close to being cast, Bomer acknowledged that his possible choice for the role would have been cut short due to his sexual orientation.

Bomer, 46, recalled that at one point he was under serious consideration to play Clark Kent in a movie that ultimately did not materialize. This feature film, titled Superman: Flyby, was an early version of the version of the superhero written by JJ Abrams. According to Bomer, he had signed a contract to star in three films for Warner Bros., indicating that he was the director’s choice for the role.

However, Bomer, who did not come out as gay until 2012, suggested that his sexual orientation may have affected his casting. When asked about it, he replied: “Yes, that is my understanding. “That was a time in the industry when something like that could still be used against you.”

Bomer did not elaborate on who or why his sexuality might have influenced his casting. For its part, Warner Bros. has not responded or made any official statement in this regard.

Matt Bomer is not the only actor who has claimed to have been rejected for a role due to his sexual orientation. Author Jackie Collins also shared a similar story in a 2012 interview with Gaydar Radio, the Advocate reported.
