The Italian Senate unleashed an intense controversy today by approving, at the request of the ruling coalition, a proposal that puts an end to the limit of students who can enroll in the Faculty of Medicine, a measure harshly criticized by the Order of Physicians.
The decision was adopted today practically unanimously by the Senate Education Commission, announced its president, Roberto Marti, of the League, who expressed his satisfaction with the approval “of the rejection of limited figures in Medicine, with the maximum convergence of all political forces”.
“The odious limit number that we have known in the last 25 years will no longer exist. We will offer our children the possibility of freely enrolling in the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine and starting a path that will allow them to have time and a way to orient themselves in the university world, which is a great novelty for everyone,” added Senator Marti.
With the new system, “students will also have the opportunity to prove their vocation and demonstrate the skills acquired through the study of the basic disciplines of these careers,” he added.
The end of the limited number of students who can register for medicine received immediate support from several politicians. “Great satisfaction. It is a historic battle of the League that finally advances in the Senate. From words to actions,” said minister and vice-premier Matteo Salvini.
For its part, Brothers of Italy, the party of Premier Giorgia Meloni, highlighted that definitively overcoming, after decades of waiting, the current selection system for access to Medicine and Surgery and Dentistry careers is a revolution.”
“The new system, explains the party’s head of Universities, Massimo Miscusi, will allow free access to the first semester of the Medicine degree to all students, who will then be able to continue their studies according to the schedule through a uniform evaluation , objective and national of its performance”.
On the contrary, the order of doctors expressed their open opposition to the initiative, which they considered lacking common sense.
“Eliminating the restricted number in Medicine means that within ten years, the time needed to train a doctor, we will have a plethora of graduates who will have no chance of finding work as doctors. We will only produce unemployed people,” the president of the National Federation of the Orders of Physicians, Surgeons and Dentists (Fnomceo), Filippo Anelli.
