EPS become Health and Life Managers in the health reform: Doctor Galo Viana

In the middle of health system reform process in Colombiahe Doctor Galo Viana, president of Mutualser EPS and in charge of the management of Gestarsalud, highlights a significant change that said system is undergoing.

Previously, the Health Promotion Entities (EPS) were focused on provision of medical servicesbut now they are evolving into new entities called Health and Life Managers.

This change represents a revolution in the way in which the medical attention and resources are managed in the country.

According to Viana, this transformation implies a more comprehensive approach and focused on the holistic well-being of citizens. In his own words, “The most important change is the precision that remains in this bill of the functions, the role and the responsibilities of health and life managerssomething that was not clearly defined in the project that sank.”

Dr. Viana also addressed the speculation about pressure from the governmentclarifying that he does not feel pressured and that he participates in the discussions with the aim of seeking new agreements for the benefit of the health system.

I don’t feel pressured“I understand that there are public policies that change,” mentioned Dr. Galo.

In relation to criticism about the business approach in the agreement, Dr. Viana stressed the commitment to service and need to guarantee the financial viability of organizations. He emphasized that during the discussions and conversations they have prioritized these aspects over purely business considerations.

Likewise, Dr. Viana addressed realistic expectations about the proposed changes, warning that health systems will always face difficulties and that the reform should not be expected to solve all problems immediately.

Regarding support for the agreement, Dr. Viana emphasized the need to continue working together with the government and noted that They are not endorsing the bill in its entirety due to financial reservationsbut they are committed to continuing to collaborate to improve the health system in Colombia.
