The Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME) has issued a statement defending that aesthetic medicine “can only be carried out by doctors.” Likewise, and in support of the statements made by Dr. Soledad Lagüens in Seville Magazinshas maintained that “it is essential that the population knows that only doctors can carry out aesthetic medicine treatments.”
The statement emphasizes that “aesthetic medicine is regulated and can only be carried out by a doctor” and argues the rulings dated May 29, 2019, December 12, 2019 and April 1, 2020 of the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid .
In another line, “it shows that substances or articles intended for use as facial fillers or in other dermal areas ‘can only be administered by properly trained health professionals who are qualified or accredited in accordance with national legislation’.” “The rulings of our highest courts consider that the regulations attribute to the doctor the powers to plan and apply non-surgical and surgical body-aesthetic treatments,” she adds.
The SEME has also made reference to the educational field by determining that “there are multiple Spanish universities that have recognized that the expert or master’s program in aesthetics or dermoaesthetics does not qualify for the exercise of any profession that only the Law enables.” “The law only qualifies the doctor to practice aesthetic medicine,” the agency insists.
In this sense, it also emphasizes that “to carry out aesthetic medicine treatments in a clinic, it is necessary to have Unit U.48 and for this it is essential that the unit be run by a doctor.” “Aesthetic medicine treatments require, like any medical treatment, a specific diagnosis, since they can even be counterproductive from an aesthetic point of view and produce serious adverse effects (such as necrosis) if they are not diagnosed correctly. This diagnostic embodiment and resolution of medical complications is only obtained with a degree in medicine,” he concludes.
