Bernard Hill’s career
Born in Blackley, England, in 1944, he grew up in a Catholic family of miners and was drawn to dramatic art from a young age, studying at the Manchester Polytechnic School of Drama. He was married to actress Marianna Hill.
Additionally, he played Sergeant Putnam in ‘Gandhi’ (1982) and had supporting roles in British drama programs such as ‘I, Claudius’ (1976).
In the BBC adaptation of ‘Wolf Hall’, he was Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk.
Actress Barbara Dickson, who worked with him on a musical based on the Beatles, described him as a “wonderful actor.”
BBC Drama director Lindsay Salt said Hill “blazed a trail on screen” and her career full of iconic roles is a testament to her talent.
