University of Valparaíso – Work K/ONFERENCIA opens Theater Season of the UV Black Room

The play “K/ONFERENCIA”, by Ruleta Teatro, will begin this Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th, at 7:00 p.m., to the Theater Season of the Sala Negra Juan Barattini Carvelli, of the Theater School of the University of Valparaíso , located at Avenida Brasil 1647, Valparaíso. Admission is three thousand pesos for students, five thousand pesos for seniors and seven thousand pesos for the general public. More information on Instagram @escuelateatrouv.

Ruleta Teatro is an emerging company made up of actors and actresses from the Valparaíso Region, which was born in 2019. Sebastián Aliaga, director and playwright of the play, says that he discovered “a play called ‘Conference on Rain’ by Juan Villoro , which was, in a certain sense, a piece of light for my concerns. Years later, much more decidedly immersed in the world of letters, and due to the help I received with the award of a State fund, I did a master’s degree in literature.”

“This helped me a lot to strengthen the drive to want to intersect literary fields with theater. Put them in tension, conjugate them, unsay them. One day, just by coincidence, I went to a feminist conference that closed with a performance by Ana María Galindo, who, unlike the rest of the speakers, stood on the table, threw papers at the audience, read poetry and catapulted criticism towards the neoliberal world. This last experience brought together the previous concerns and prompted the definitive need to write the work,” she adds.

The writing and staging are inspired by several cultural productions, such as Saló or the 120 Days of Sodom by Pier Paolo Pasolini and Pink Flamingos by John Waters. Also two philosophical materials, “The Society of the Spectacle” by Guy Debord, hence the saturation of television sounds, and “Culture and Simulacrum” by Jean Baudrillard, which argues the turn from a conference to a collective kidnapping.

Actress Maité Rojas comments that “one of the great challenges of this work is in the representation of violence itself. I think it is both a narrative and an interpretive challenge, where the important thing, in my opinion, is to find a balance when putting it on stage, constructing a raw but at the same time digestible story for the audience. It is important to be strategic when using the resources that we have as a company, so that this representation leaves a thirst for reflection rather than a rejection as such, which would also be valid in any case.”

Meanwhile, actor Rodrigo Muñoz points out that “from the more interpretive side, I can say that K/ONFERENCIA is a waste of absurdity, of ‘in your face’, funny and stark. It is quite challenging to propose to represent the entire weight of a neoliberal system in the hands of characters who are references to our history. It is nice to see how we have been creating, resisting and going where the work takes us, grateful for the trust placed in the team.”

2024 season

This work, and all those that make up the season, give continuity to Sala Negra’s editorial line. The selection of the different Public Programming Committees coincides in the importance of theater with a critical perspective and emphasis on contemporary performing practices.

The other works that make up the season are: “Romeo and Julieta de la Caleta”, May 3 and 4; “WALK. Scenic test of imaginaries”, May 10 and 11; “Scenes of Population in Resistance [conferencia escénica]”, May 31 and June 1; “Argument against the existence of intelligent life in the southern cone”, June 14 and 15; “Useless forest: manifesto in defense of nature”, August 16 and 17; “Plesosauria awakens”, August 23 and 24; “LSCDLP. The Constructive Sum of Disturbances”, September 6 and 7; “Mediocres”, October 4 and 5; “In self-defense”, October 18 and 19, and “Queer kiss in a pack of dogs”, November 29 and 30.
