The official candidate Claudia Sheinbaum expanded the advantage over her opponents ahead of the June 2 elections in Mexico, according to a survey released this Wednesday.

The survey by the consulting firm Mitofsky, published by the newspaper El Economista, was carried out on 1,300 adults between April 10 and 13, less than two months before the battle at the polls, of which The first female president of the Latin American country could emerge.

Morena’s candidate, former mayor of Mexico City and close ally of the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, achieved 51.4% support compared to 26.7% for her main rival, Xóchtil Gálvez, who is running for an opposition alliance formed by the PAN, PRI and PRD parties.

In March, the difference between them was 21.7 percentage points (50.5% and 28.8%), compared to 24.7 in April.

In third place is Jorge Álvarez Máynez, from Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), who went from 4.5% of preferences last month to 9.3% in the current survey.

12.6% of those surveyed in April would not vote for any candidate or responded “does not know/does not answer”, when in March that percentage was 15.9%. Boosted in part by López Obrador’s high popularity, which was around 60% during almost his entire administration, Sheinbaum easily led most of the surveys carried out before and during the electoral campaign, which formally began in March.
