Pure love! The story of a patient with a serious illness who got married in a Coquimbo hospital

At 62 years old, Eduardo Miranda shows that dreams have no expiration date. Defying the uncertainty of pulmonary fibrosis that has affected him for three years, he decided to take a step forward and marry the love of his life at the Coquimbo Hospital, where he is hospitalized.

The special ceremony was held in the Medicine Service of the Buenos Aires campus, and was organized entirely by the social worker of the unit and the health personnel, who coordinated all the preparations with the civil registry officer, in addition to the making of rings. , the bouquet, the decoration and the dinner.

This is how Don Eduardo and his partner, Diana, said “yes” in front of more than 30 officials who came to accompany them and applaud them for consolidating a love that has already spanned more than 15 years. “I think the officials are a seven. Pure human warmth, they went overboard. I never thought this would happen, that I was going to get married in a hospital, it wasn’t in my books, but it happened. Thanks to all the staff at the San Pablo Hospital,” the groom commented with emotion, adding that “I wanted to get married so that she would not be helpless. Because this way I give her peace of mind and she gives it to me. She has taken care of me 24/7, so not even God forbid, but if something happens to me, then the pension and her house will be left for her.”

United for health

After spending 27 years of his life working as a janitor, this Coquimba native who has already grieved due to widowhood, was finally able to fulfill his dream of marrying his beloved Diana. In fact, he says that the disease forced him to postpone his civil union on two occasions, but this time, the third time was the charm thanks to the staff of the San Pablo Hospital.

“I was going to get married, we were going to do it before I got sick. I got sick and it was postponed, and from there I was hospitalized a second time, and it was postponed again. This would be the third time. Well, we were talking about this with my partner and the social worker listened and told me ‘don’t worry, we will solve the problem for you’. So they mobilized to create the Civil Union accordingly.”

Regarding the officials who spontaneously joined this beautiful initiative, Dr. Marcela Maureira, head of the Medicine Service, explains that “the nurses, paramedical technicians, the hospital’s social team, nutritionists, doctors, students who are in controlled practices. That is, it is something that actually involves the entire service. This excites us and allows us, as Don Eduardo said, to complete this project, one more stage where his hospitalization is not a cause for concern, but also for joy.”

One of the main promoters of this act of love was Viviana Albarnez, a social worker from the Medicine Service, who in just three days managed to mobilize her colleagues to carry out the wedding, thanks to the vocation and empathy that identifies them. “This is the way of working that is implemented in the service, of trying to be part of our patients’ processes, whether on this special occasion, birthdays, or special dates, we try to organize something nice for the patients , something significant that marks them in a positive way,” he said.

Sense of vocation and empathy that Dr. Maureira shares. “This is part of what gives excitement to care and the humanization of all medical care, and in our service it is super important to be able to support these initiatives. Initiatives that start from the patients, but that are a source of emotion and vibration for all levels.”

After finishing the ceremony with the obligatory kiss, Diana concluded this stage like any bride: throwing her bouquet in front of those present. In addition, both closed by enjoying an intimate dinner specially prepared by the hospital’s Food and Nutrition Service staff.
