In statements to Prensa Latina, the main wrestling coach, Julio Mendieta, explained that Geandry Garzón (74 kg) and Arturo Silot (97 kg) will remain in this Caribbean nation until May 5, while Alejandro Valdés (65 kg ) is in Switzerland as part of its preparation.

Since the 17th of this month, when they arrived on Quisqueyan soil, Garzón and Silot have been perfecting the technical-tactical elements at the Juan Pablo Duarte sports complex, in this capital.

To do this, they share training with Creole fighters, focused on perfecting the technical movements that provide more points and that could guarantee victory, said the coach.

He recalled that Garzón, Silot and Valdés won the right to be in the long-awaited Olympic Games during one of the qualifying events, held in Acapulco, Mexico, last March.

He commented that the possibility of being at this training base allows athletes to concentrate more on preparation, maintain an adequate weight and achieve good physical condition and strength.

He explained that this first stop in the Dominican Republic is the beginning of the technical-tactical and physical preparation, since after returning to Cuba on May 5 they will travel to Russia on May 12 to continue training, then they will participate in a tournament in Spain and on July 15 they will travel to Paris.

He considered that wrestling is a sport to take into account in the Olympics, based on Cuba’s performance in the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, where it won 14 medals (seven gold, five silver and two bronze) among all categories. fighting.

In that sense, he highlighted that in Santiago de Chile Alejandro Valdés revalidated his title as Lima 2019 Pan American champion by beating the American Nahshon Garre, while Arturo Silot won the silver medal in 97 kg in the same event.

He expressed confidence in Cuba’s performance in the five rings event and assured that the three athletes feel safe and will seek their best performance on the blue canvas where so many athletes yearn to fight.
