More than 60 environmental organizations ask the Entre Ríos government not to allow hunting of native birds – General Interest

The letter addressed to the Minister of Economic Development, Guillermo Bernaudo, requests the suspension of hunting for 5 years until there are reliable and participatory studies on birds and the lead contamination produced by hunting.

From the NGO they pointed out that “the growing and forceful social rejection towards the hunting of native animals was strongly felt last Tuesday when 61 institutions and groups from all over the country sent a letter to Minister Bernaudo requesting a hearing so that it is not enable the hunting season, especially in preserves.

At the same time, it was highlighted that the reaction of environmental entities was a consequence of the fact that “days ago, the Government of Rogelio Frigerio organized the presentation of a study – paid for by an entity linked to the hunting reserves – on the duck populations of Entre Ríos. It received harsh criticism from local environmentalists since it was taken as obvious support from the Government for the killing of native animals in the preserves.”

The letter against hunting has the support of animal and environmental institutions of national prestige such as the Azara Foundation, the Cullunche Foundation, Pumakawa, the Habitat and Development Foundation, COENDÚ of Uruguay, Pájaros Caídos and the Association for Environmental Justice. In turn, it was signed by several Entre Ríos institutions such as the Paraná Ecologist Forum, CEYDAS, Ecoguay, Ayuda Animal, Conciencia Animal and the Institute of
Animal Law of the Entre Ríos Bar Association, among others.

The Resolutions of 2022 and 2023 that enabled hunting “were annulled and declared unconstitutional by the Entre Ríos Justice, as well as violating international treaties such as the Escazú Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity,” the letter indicates. In addition, he points out that hunting “attacks the natural heritage of all Entre Ríos residents.”

Finally, it urges the Government of Frigerio to “not enable small hunting of native birds for the next 5 years until there are reliable and participatory studies of bird populations and the contamination produced by lead in ammunition.” among other demands.
