Up through the Mariela port, a donation from the People’s Republic of China

As a sign of the friendship and cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and Cuba, a donation of rice of 1,584 tons arrived at the Mariel Container Terminal, which will be followed by six more lots, for a total of 20,000 tons, which will arrive by this port and that of Santiago de Cuba in the next two months.

At the reception ceremony for the first shipment, His Excellency Ma Hui, Chinese ambassador to Cuba, pointed out that this food aid is part of the assistance package for the Caribbean nation and is a reflection of the mutual solidarity of both countries.

Likewise, he specified that they collaborate with the Cuban side to actively study and explore medium and long-term solutions in order to achieve sustainable agricultural development.

China is willing, he said, to share its experience and technology, strengthen technical and personnel exchanges in the agricultural field, help improve food production capacity, as well as defend food sovereignty and security in order to maintain the plate of rice firmly in the Cubans’ own hands.

On behalf of the government, the Party and the Cuban people, Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga, Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, expressed gratitude for this noble gesture in complex moments when our country is going through difficult economic circumstances.

He also highlighted that this fact strengthens and demonstrates the relations of friendship, solidarity and cooperation, which have a special character between both countries. We are sure that together we will contribute with our work to the development of the community with a shared future that our main leaders have decided for our people, he stated.

Last April, the Chinese government delivered another 408 tons of rice through six charter flights.
