The Port of Cartagena Group is the third most efficient port in the world according to the latest Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2023, developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, the results of which were issued today, June 4. According to what was said in the report presented by the entities mentioned, this achievement highlights the importance of resilience and efficiency in the global context of maritime trade.

The 2023 CPPI is based on an unprecedented data set that includes more than 182,000 vessel arrivals, 238.2 million movements and approximately 381 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) during the full calendar year 2023.

These data reflect the performance of 405 container ports worldwide, highlighting the length of port stay of container ships as a key efficiency indicator.

“We receive with joy, humility and complacency these results that are the product of the efforts of our collaborators, and their commitment to being better every day. We invest in training, infrastructure, innovation and technology to make Colombia competitive in international maritime trade, and this indicator tells us that we are on the right path,” said Alfonso Salas, manager of the Port of Cartagena Group.

“While the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have eased in 2023, container shipping remains an unpredictable and volatile sector,” said Martin Humphreys, Chief Transport Economist at the World Bank. “Major ports need to invest in resilience, new technology and green infrastructure to ensure the stability of global markets and the sustainability of the shipping industry.”

The report also highlights that ports in East and Southeast Asia continued to stand out, occupying 13 of the top 20 spots in the index.

“There is greater awareness and focus on port resilience and efficiency, and greater understanding of the negative impact of port delays on economic development,” said Turloch Mooney, Head of Port Intelligence and Analysis at S&P Global Market Intelligence. “

The Port of Yangshan in China took first place for the second consecutive year, while the Port of Salalah in Oman maintained the second position. The Port of Cartagena in Colombia rose to third place, consolidating its position in international maritime trade.

The report takes into account the following factors: 1) arrival time of the vessels, 2) average stay time of the vessels in the port, 3) productivity and number of crane movements.

These are the Top 5 of the measurement:

  • Yangshan (China)
  • Salalah (Oman)
  • Cartagena Colombia)
  • Tangier Med (Morocco)
  • Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia)
