Santa Fe registers 94 homicides so far this year, the lowest record in the last decade – Suma Política

At this time of year, Santa Fe records the lowest homicide record in the first half of the last ten years. Until midnight on Saturday, June 8, there were 94 homicides throughout the provincial territory, a figure that from 2014 to the present has always accumulated between 150 and 200 cases at this time of year. In recent years these figures have always doubled, reaching annual peaks that exceeded 400 cases on the last day of December.

Of the 94 cases counted in 2024, 52 occurred in the Rosario department and 19 in La Capital. In May in Rosario there were 8 cases of homicide, and since January when 17 were registered, there has been a drop to 7 in February, 11 in March and 9 in April.

In the first week of June last year, the Rosario department already recorded four homicides. Now there are none. And in the previous ten years the number always ranged between 3 and 7 for the first seven days of the sixth month.

In the 31 days of May 2024, the 8 homicides that occurred are only equivalent to the same number that was recorded in that same period in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic. In 2021 it reached 24, in 2022 it reached 23 and in 2023 it reached 23.

The same thing happens with the 9 cases that occurred in April of this year, which are only below the 4 events in the same month of 2020, but were surpassed by the 21 in 2021, the 35 in 2022 and the 22 last year.

This downward trend in homicides has been more marked since last March: the 11 cases that month are the lowest of the decade, with the latest records being: 22 in 2023 and 14 in 2022.

The departments that concentrate the majority of homicides are Rosario and La Capital, followed by San Lorenzo and Castellanos and the majority of the provincial departments did not have homicides in some of the last months.

These data are recorded in a comparative report on the number of intentional homicides that occurred between 2014 and 2024 (taking as reference the period from January 1 to June 8), where you can follow the daily evolution of these crimes. within the province of Santa Fe.

The term “homicides” includes those episodes in which a person causes the death of others through intentional use of violence, and includes all cases of intentional homicides or homicides that occur in the context of another intentional crime. That is to say that in addition to the definitions of the Argentine Penal Code of simple and aggravated homicide, those committed in the occasion of robbery and any other crime that results from another crime, such as rape followed by death, are also contemplated.

The data arises from a combination of judicial and police sources, and from the work between the Information Divisions of the 19 Regional Units and the Secretariat of Criminal Policy and Human Rights, dependent on the Attorney General’s Office of the Public Prosecutor’s Office..
