The Andalusian Film Archive this Tuesday hosted the presentation of the book A Path of Light: History of the Royal Schools of La Inmaculada. Written by the teacher Giuseppe Palmierithis literary and graphic work addresses five centuries of history of the Pious Schools of Córdobadelving into its academic, patrimonial and social values, according to the Diocese of Córdoba.

Palmieri’s book It has as its background the documentary 1553-2021 from Santa Catalina school to Royal Pious Schools, in which personalities from the academic world and professors from outside Spain were involved. This witness has given rise to the work of the professor of the center included in the Santos Mártires Diocesan Teaching Foundation, who is not only the author of the book, but also of the documentary and the audiovisual.

The author highlights that the shield that represents the center is “metaphor for great human values such as courage, generosity or solidarity.” These continue to be a mark of identity. “Not only the academic aspects work, but the human aspect has the same weight,” he emphasizes.

Tradition and avant-garde

For years, Andalusian families from other provinces sent their children to study at this school, if resources allowed it,“which takes into account the special importance of a center: the first institution capable of granting university degrees in Córdoba”, explains the author.

The institution, born from the impulse of the Cathedral Chapter of Córdoba, which is patron of the Royal Pious Schools of the Immaculate, collects the tradition of a center open to all where “The most important thing is still the students”says Canon Jesús Poyato, before a large group of schoolchildren present at the presentation ceremony.

This research project has been published by the Cajón de Sastre publishing house to recover “a sense of pride and justice”, in the words of the school’s director, Enrique Muñoz, for whom the school, after five centuries of uninterrupted history, continues to represent tradition and avant-garde in the context of Córdoba educational centers. The presentation ceremony was attended by the general director of Heritage of the Government of Andalusia, Juan José Primo Jurado, a student at the royal Pious Schools of the Inmaculada for six years.
