The Mistral Duo opens the 7th Piano Cycle with works for four hands by Fanndy Mendelssohn, Fazil Say, Germaine Tailleferre and Glasinovic’s Janequeo Suite.
The Artistic and Cultural Extension Center of the University of Chile begins its Seventh Piano Cycle this Wednesday, June 12 at the Teatro Universidad de Chile. The series, for the first time, will be dedicated exclusively to repertoire written for duos, including works composed for four-hand piano as well as for two pianos.
Maestro Luis Alberto Latorre, renowned soloist of the National Symphony Orchestra of Chile and artistic director of the cycle, points out that presenting these works implies “having the possibility of giving the community a wonderful repertoire, sometimes somewhat unknown, but that at least Since the 17th century many composers wrote, especially for the four-hand format and later for two pianos.”
The virtuoso soloist, President of the Republic Award in 2016, adds that “the immense amount of music written for this format dates back to times from the early Baroque to the present. Great composers dedicated part of their creation to works of this type, such as JS Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Ravel, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Bartok, Ligeti, etc., among many others.”
The first of the concerts will be performed by the Mistral Duo, made up of the outstanding national performers Karina Glasinovic and Paulina Zamora, who joined on stage under this name in 2013. Since then they have performed successfully in spaces such as the GAM , Teatro Oriente and Teatro del Lago in Frutillar. They went on an applauded tour of the United States and Brazil, premiering Chilean works and traditional repertoire. In 2018 they were invited by the Tianjin Conservatory, China, to give master classes and give a recital with works from traditional repertoire and others by Karina Glasinovic herself.
Later, they were also invited by the United States Embassy to tour the north and south of Chile, in isolated and socially risky places, while in 2020 they performed in the Dumke Room of the School of Music of the University of Utah in Salt Lake, United States, where they performed works by Mozart.
Their concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on June 12, at Providencia 043, with tickets for $9,000.
The Mistral Duo will give life in this cycle to a repertoire that includes the first and second of the Three pieces for four-hand piano by Fanny Mendelssohn (also known as Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn), a composer of great talent and versatility who, along with a catalog of more than four hundred works, also became an outstanding pianist, concert organizer, as well as an orchestral and choral director.
The program also includes Winter morning in Istanbulcomposition that closes the piano parts by the Turkish performer and composer Fazil Say; Besides the Janequeo Suite, a four-hand piano work written by one of the day’s protagonists, Karina Glasinovic, a work that – as its name indicates – is inspired by the figure of this Mapuche warrior and her resistance to Spanish colonization. After this will come the performance of two waltzes composed by Germaine Tailleferre, the only woman who was part of the legendary group of “the six”, made up of French composers with a great presence in Paris in the 1920s.
The concert will end with two emblematic composers of the so-called musical Impressionism: Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. From the first you will hear In white and blacksuite in three movements for two pianos, while the second will sound La Valsein a version for two pianos.
The Piano Series will continue on Wednesday, July 10, with the presentation of the duo made up of the acclaimed Chilean pianists Danor Quinteros and Marco Cuevas, who will address a repertoire that includes works by Mozart, Brahms, Dvorak and Rachmaninov.
