In Greece, schools and the Acropolis had to close due to the heat wave

Greece The Acropolis tourist site closed this Wednesday, suspended classes and sent medical personnel to Athens, which was facing the first heat wave of the summer.

It was expected that the temperatures will reach 43 degrees Celsius this Wednesday and Thursday in some zones of the Mediterranean country, driven by the southern winds which brought hot air and dust from North Africa.

The Acropolis Hillhome to one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world that includes the Parthenon temple, was closed from noon to 5 p.m. and Red Cross staff distributed bottles of water to tourists.

Many primary schools and daycare centers across the country will close for two days, the Reuters news agency reported.

Greece It is one of the European countries most affected by the climate. Last year, rising temperatures sparked deadly wildfires and erratic rains caused some of the worst flooding on record. According to scientists, last winter was the warmest in history and low rainfall created conditions for more fires to break out.

Last year similar conditions occurred in much of the southern Europe, including Spain, Italy, France and Portugal, where the fires caused dozens of deaths.
