With the aim of highlighting the importance of environmental conservation, sustainable tourism and sustainability, the Dry Forest team of the University of Magdalena led the conference ‘Bird tourism: a new concept in nature tourism’.

The event was organized by the Bolivarian Museum of Contemporary Art of the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, an entity that shares the missionary line of the Alma Mater, to promote environmental education and enhance the development of the territory.

The presentation held in the Alejandro Obregón room of the Museum addressed general topics about this practice dedicated to research, observation and conservation of birds, to understand the behavior or natural history of the world’s species.

Likewise, the relationship between the economy and bird diversity was discussed as an axis potentiator of ecotourism in the Region, especially in the department of Magdalena, which is home to 36.7% of Colombia’s endemic birds; 27 of them can be seen in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

This is confirmed by specialist biologist Wilson Tomás García, director of the ‘Leda Dry Forest. Mendoza’, who emphasized bird tourism as a great productive bet and at the same time, generating conservation.

“Take advantage of this bird resource that has been increasingly explored, through The various activities at a global level have strengthened the use of dry forests and other spaces, because they allow us to know through this exercise the good use of ecosystems,” he said.

This activity had a large influx of students from different public institutions of the Distrito de Santa Marta, especially those that have environmental groups; an audience that is targeted as sowing seeds for environmental awareness.

“I thought this talk was fantastic because knowing this type of information helps me especially, because I am going to provide it when guiding and let everyone know that Colombia is one of the countries with the greatest type of species and how we have to take care of them so that continue to be preserved,” said Sharol Plata Romero, a student at IED 11 deNovember.
