Groundbreaking Announced for Santiago Oeste Chile Temple

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the date of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Santiago West Chile Temple, which will be held on August 17, 2024. Elder Alan R Walker, a member of the South America South Area Presidency, will preside over the ceremony.

Attendance at the venue will be by invitation only. More details will be released as the groundbreaking date approaches. A representation of the exterior of the Temple has also been published.

Church President Russell M. Nelson announced this house of the Lord in October 2021. “I implore you to counteract the allure of the world by spending time in your life for the Lord, each and every day,” he said before announcing 13 new temples, including the Santiago Oeste Chile Temple.

The location of the new house of the Lord was published in December 2022. The temple will be built at Primo de Rivera 1551, Commune of Maipú, Santiago de Chile. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 12,500 square feet.

The first Spanish-speaking temple in South America was inaugurated in Santiago in 1983. The other four temples in operation, under construction or announced in Chile are in Antofagasta, Concepción, Santiago Oeste and Viña del Mar.

In 1851, Elder Parley P. Pratt and his wife Phoebe are the first Church leaders to serve a mission in Chile. Today, the country has become home to more than 600,000 Latter-day Saints in 571 congregations.

Latter-day Saints worship in temples for several reasons: to feel God’s love and peace, to learn more about God’s plan for His children and the gospel of Jesus Christ, to make promises with God and his husband or wife, and to unite families in this life and the next through sacred ordinances.
