The San Pedro University Hospital adheres to the SueñON project to facilitate and care for the sleep of hospitalized people, an initiative that will be carried out in Pulmonology and is expected to extend to the rest of the units with the aim of facilitating and caring for the sleep of people hospitalized.
Thus, the SueñoN project arises from the need to address, from health professionals with nursing leadership, the problem of sleep interruption in hospitalized patients and their consequent lack of rest. One of its main objectives is to adopt a series of recommendations to reduce the effects of the factors that intervene in sleep disruption.
In this sense, the measures that have been implemented are related, on the one hand, to the adaptation of the environment by reducing ambient noise, excessive light and promoting comfort during rest. On the other hand, through the planning of nursing care, respecting patients’ rest periods and, finally, with ongoing training and awareness activities where professionals, patients and family members will be involved.
To implement this initiative, which Pulmonology plans to extend to the rest of the hospital units and services, several training sessions have been carried out for the professionals of the Pulmonology Unit of the San Pedro University Hospital.
Sleep interruptions affect 82% of those hospitalized in the SNS
There are studies that confirm that among the factors that alter the sleep of patients admitted to a hospital are waking up and going to bed earlier than usual and nocturnal interruptions. These interruptions are usually due to excessive light, nursing routines and care, the patient or roommate, noise in the hospitalization unit, the bed being not comfortable and the room temperature being adequate, and finally, pain, fatigue, fear or worry. To all this are added daytime naps caused by the time they must remain in bed or sitting without major distraction.
According to some studies, 82% of people hospitalized in the SNS had had sleep interruption at some point during their admission and 33% of them stated that they had many problems sleeping adequately.
The San Pedro University Hospital (HUSP) has launched the SueñON initiative, promoted by the SERIS Hospital Care Nursing Care Directorate, the Pulmonology service and coordinated by the Healthcare Quality and Safety Unit. This program, promoted by the Care Research Unit (Investen-isciii) of the Carlos III Health Institute, aims to facilitate and care for the sleep of hospitalized people.
