Concern about shortages and smuggling: Nariño Departmental Assembly debates on emblematic liquors

In the ordinary session this Tuesday, the Departmental Assembly of Nariño held a political control debate on the disposal of Aguardiente Nariño and Aguardiente Galeras, two emblematic liquors of the region that represent an important source of income for the department.

The debate, promoted by deputy Fabio Zarama, was attended by the Secretary of the Treasury, Vicente Menza, the director of the Administrative Department of Contracting (DAC), Marco Fidel Marínez, and the undersecretary of revenue, David Cortez.

The initiative arose from community concern about the possible sale of these brands, which could have a negative impact on the local economy and public health, due to the risk of increased smuggling and consumption of adulterated liquor.

During the debate, deputies expressed concern about the shortage of the product and the lack of clear information about the disposal process. In addition, they highlighted the importance of guaranteeing the quality of Aguardiente Nariño and Aguardiente Galeras, as well as promoting their responsible consumption.

Conclusions of the debate:

  • The DAC reported that the sale process of Aguardiente Nariño and Aguardiente Galeras will be awarded between July 2 and 4.
  • The departmental administration must provide clear answers and effective solutions regarding the allocation of the maquila and the marketing of liquor.
  • A detailed analysis of the projection for the next three and a half years must be carried out, and an effective promotion and marketing strategy must be formulated to position these products in the market.
  • It is necessary to look for other sources of income to invest in the health of the department.
  • It is proposed to carry out a consultancy that evaluates the viability of creating a liquor industry in Nariño.
