The people served in the different projects against drug addiction Man Project continue to increase. In fact, since the covid 19 pandemic to date the figure has doubled. In 2023, the entity served a total of 3,876 people in Córdoba and the province, about 300 more than in 2022, according to the report corresponding to last year, presented this Wednesday by Proyecto Hombre Córdoba, coinciding with the International Day to Combat Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

As reported by the director-president of Proyecto Hombre Córdoba and province, Jesus Tamayo, these data do not respond only to the fact that addictions have increased but to the fact that people who previously did not have the tools to get out of the problem are now being cared for and there are more and more thanks to the programs developed by the organization and their increasing weight. , in different parts of the province of Cordoba. To this he added that the Covid 19 pandemic was the “trigger” for many addicts to ask for help and for months they did not have access to programs and the consumption of alcohol and drugs at home increased.

Regarding the 2023 data, as detailed by Tamayo, of the 3,876 attentions to men and women of the province, 1,355 belong to treatment and 2,521 to programs prevention. The person in charge of the entity has highlighted the importance of the last figure, since, for the most part, the services have been carried out within the territory’s educational centers. Likewise, as the director has clarified, with these figures, attention only reaches the 40% of people who ask for help and that many do not manage to enter any center.

Masculinized profile

Most interventions, both in treatment and prevention, almost a 93%are carried out in men (3,602) and around a 7% to women (274). However, the actions that were carried out with women’s relatives were superior to those in the men’s environment, who were 621 and 442respectively. The main substances that cause addiction continue to be alcohol and cocaine, in addition to the consumption of antidepressants and anxiolytics in women. Likewise, the most frequent age of users who ask for help is between 35 and 40 years old.

Regarding the people treated in treatment, a 89% They are men and a eleven% women.

On the other hand, Tamayo has clarified that in recent months the time of attention has been reduced. He has clarified that the duration of the treatment depends on the age of the user and the length of time he has been consuming and that at younger ages it is between 12 and 18 monthswhich increase to between 24 and 36 months to users of mature age.

Thus, the president has specified that Proyecto Hombre has reinforced work with women, the programs penitentiaryattention to homelessness and the presence ruralconsidering that 64.16% of the people served in 2023 corresponded to the province of Córdoba.

Diversity of programs

Tamayo has also pointed out that there is a “quantitative” jump in transversal and specific resources, so that 80% of the users who have gone through the base program – which provides a daily and intensive response to the problem, with the possibility of confinement in the center – have previously gone through other specific resources within the program support -based on not so intensive outpatient treatment-.

As to womenAs detailed, during 2023 specific lines of work have been intensified in violence and different types of aggression, both in residential and outpatient resources. Mixed coexistence has also been achieved in the Intrapenitentiary community thanks to joint work with the Penitentiary Institutions team of Córdoba. Proyecto Hombre has also highlighted the achievements in transversal resources of self-esteem, empowerment and self-affirmation, as well as the evolution that has been made in the Therapeutic Community of women, with a growth of between 4 and 6% more compared to previous years .

Another of the objectives of Proyecto Hombre Córdoba has been to revitalize the Intrapenitentiary Communitynot only in number of services, but also with specific projects: such as the transformation of the therapeutic module of Proyecto Hombre for men into a mixed addiction care module, specific intervention in the women’s module and attention to the general demand existing in the rest of modules of the Córdoba Penitentiary Center.
