In a recent book dedicated to the behind-the-scenes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a chapter returns to the filming of ‘The Incredible Hulk’ in 2008 and Edward Norton’s desire to take control of it
16 years ago, while Kevin Feige and Jon Fravreau were still laying the first stones of what would soon be the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was released in theaters The incredible Hulk with Edward Norton.
Before Mark Ruffalo gave life to Marvel’s green giant, it was Norton who provided the image and voice of Bruce Banner in front of Louis Leterrier’s camera. But as recently mentioned in a Looper article pointing out the recent work of Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales and Gavin Edwards, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, The production of the film was not easy.
In fact, as we learn in one chapter of the book, Edward Norton apparently I had a very particular vision of the project and wanted to take the character down a significantly different path than the one we know.

Initially he could intervene in the script, but his contributions to it were greatly reduced and the studio decided to regain control of the film. According to the book’s authors, this somewhat complicated experience even led the production to establish a policy, so that creative control of future films is now in the hands of the producers.
According to an interview given to New York TimesEdward Norton had in mind a much more serious film, close to the trilogy of The dark knight by Christopher Nolan:
I really liked the Hulk comics, found them legendary, and aligned myself with the path taken by Christopher Nolan in Batman. Something big, dark and serious. If there was anything that had that potential it was the Hulk. It is literally the myth of Prometheus. I pitched a two-movie project: the origin and then the idea of Hulk as a conscious dreamer. And they told me: That’s what we want! But it turned out that that was not the case. But I really enjoyed making that movie and it got me very close to Feige.
