Endgame. An unrepeatable phenomenon even for Marvel Studios

Is the success of Avengers: Endgame the worst enemy of future Marvel Studios releases?

As the famous Lord of the Rings meme would say, “I was there, when steve rogers raised the hammer of the god of thunder“But before we go ahead and talk about the peak moment (so far) of the Marvel Studios historyand even though it is a movie that has been released for 5 years now.let’s make a warning:

Spoilers alert! If you haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame yet and don’t want your experience ruined, it’s best to stop here and come back after you’ve enjoyed this epic movie.

5 years ago, although it seems like five thousand years ago. And a lot has happened in the world since Avengers: Endgame hit the movie theaters. A cinematic event of superhero proportions that neither its managers, nor its competitors, They have come close to repeating. As I am now older than a forest, I have been lucky enough to experience some enormous cinematographic events. I remember that the day it premiered The Matrix, in 1999, the room was almost empty. That same year, with The Phantom Menace, the cinema was packed. I experienced the glorious training sessions of Peter Jackson’s trilogy The Lord of the rings, and the inglorious premieres of The Hobbit trilogy. But I think that I have never experienced a phenomenon that linked the audience as much as Endgame. That includes Star Wars, and be careful I have experienced a Star Wars Celebration.

Viewers, assemble!

But this was different, because Star Wars excites and makes one’s hair stand out and makes one crybut it excites fans, while Endgame made people stand up and applaud just by being there on opening day at the time the film was ending. It doesn’t matter how involved they were in this mythology or how much or how little they participated in Marvelite phenomena: being there was something historic. I want to think that the opening day of the first Star Wars, back in 1977, was similar.

And it’s no wonder, because that snap of the call Infinitive Saga accompanied an entire generation of viewers: from the premiere of Iron Man in 2008 to Endgame 11 years later, in 2009. One premiere after another in which we do not stop meet new characters and new situations with a style and pace that only Marvel Studios seemed capable of maintaining for a decade. Think that there were no less than 22 films and a handful of series. A massive social success that has not been able to recovercertainly, but that’s another topic. The important is that I haven’t seen anything comparable to the epic culmination that was Endgame on opening night.

Avengers: Endgame enjoyed overwhelmingly positive reception from critics and viewers alike. The film was acclaimed for its exciting narrative, its direction and the moving performances of its lead cast. Not bad at all for a blockbuster. Furthermore, it managed to raise more than 2,798 million dollars worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time. Its cultural impact is undeniable, uniting fans and viewers in an unforgettable cinematic experience.

An experience that is difficult to repeat in a cinema

This success is just a Platonic shadow on the wall of the cinematographic cave, because, as I told you at the beginning, you had to be there to understand it. The magic, the spell. Marvel made the same thing he has been doing with his comics since the 60s, presenting incredible stories, with charismatic characters in spectacular confrontations in which the villain seems like he will win, but no. The merit is that Marvel Studios managed to replicate the formula in another format adding ingredients that managed to create an unparalleled global phenomenon. The result is that Endgame did not leave an entire generation indifferent, not just fans, but viewers from all over the world.

Years have passed and the musical theme that accompanies the beginning of the great battle at the end of Endgame, that magnificent “Portals” by maestro Alan Silvestri, continues to make my spider sense vibrate. For me, who has been a marvel for as long as I can remember, it was an almost mystical experience. Even today I wear some of those YouTube videos recorded in movie theaters from around the world that day trying to rrecover a little that feeling of transcendence. Marvel Studios did it wonderfully, and it will be something that will be remembered in another 5 years, and surely another ten. Surely even more. I know I will never forget it.

Difficult to repeat, but not impossible

For all its success, Marvel Studios faces a monumental challenge in replicating the Endgame phenomenon. One of the main reasons is that many of the film’s most iconic characters are no longer available. With the end of the Infinity Saga, characters like Iron Man, Captain America and Black Widow have left the scene, leaving a void that will be difficult to fill. You just have to see the reception of all the releases after Endgame from Marvel Studios, especially The Marvels.

But all is not lost. Despite the challenge Marvel Studios faces, there is still hope for the future of the Marvel cinematic universe. One of the greatest opportunities for study lies in the X Menwhich begins this summer with the premiere of Deadpool and Wolverine, and The Fantastic Fourtwo superhero teams that have been an integral part of the Marvel universe in comics and that now want to conquer the mass public like The Avengers or The Guardians of the Galaxy did at the time.

The greatest difficulty is to regain your trust.an audience that seems exhausted by the genre. All in all, I trust Marvel because the is worthy”, of Evans, Johansson, Ruffalo and (especially) Downey Jr. I have faith, because In 2008 no one gave half a euro for the premiere of Iron Man.
