KINSASA, Democratic Republic of Congo (AP) — A landslide in southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo that was triggered by heavy rain left at least 15 dead and 60 missing, local officials said Sunday.

Seven people were found alive after Saturday’s avalanche near the town of Idiofa.

“There is a hill above the port, and the rain caused the soil on the hill to collapse,” Dhedhe Mupasa, a deputy local elected official, told reporters on Sunday.

Acting provincial governor Félicien Kiway told reporters that a team had been sent to help search for survivors, and seven people were found alive and hospitalized. Another 60 people were still missing, he added.

A local official noted that it was difficult to determine the exact number of missing people, since a market was held in the area every Saturday. The official described the area as a port where fishermen came to sell fish and buy soap.
