Frodo is a cat which Sam, played by Nyong’o, carries with her throughout the entire film through what is left of New York, United States. He was brought to life by two felines: Schnitzel and Nicoaccording to Sarnoski in an interview with the media IndieWire.

Schnitzel’s fame was not limited to the big screen, as he also ventured into the world of social networks, specifically in instagramwhere he has an exclusive profile through which photographs and videos are shared that witness his daily adventures.

Schnitzel and Nico were chosen from a dozen cats to play Frodo.

Sarnoski recounted that “at first,” people assumed that since it was a “big movie,” Frodo would be created through CGIWell, in his words, “it would make everything much easier”; However, the director had other plans.

“It was important to me to have a real cat that you could feel connected to,” Sarnoski admitted. The production hired a London animal training company, whose professionals introduced them to “many different felines.”

“We only had a couple of days where we would sit in the office and they would bring in a dozen cats. “We met them and got a sense of their personality, and Schnitzel and Nico were clear choices of ‘thank God, they have some kind of soul behind their eyes,'” the director said.

The work dynamic on the recording set, as Sarnoski told the outlet, consisted of “sitting calmly and not irritating the cats.” Real-life actors Nyong’o and Quinn bonded with Schnitzel and Nico to help them feel safe while being held.

During the interview, the director admitted that interacting with the Frodo performers “was something big for Lupita (Nyong’o)”, since when filming of the film began, the actress felt “terrified of felines”, as such degree that “he didn’t even want to touch them.”

Nyong’o told the magazine Glamor who underwent “cat therapy” to overcome his fears before filming. Thanks to this strategy, she managed to live with Schnitzel and Nico.

She managed to feel so comfortable with four-legged actors that she went so far as to adopt her own cat. One of her friends took her to the Los Angeles animal shelter Best Friends Animal Society, where she saw a sign that she took as a sign.

“(The sign) said something like: ‘Aren’t you over your ex? Adopt a cat’. He was spot on,” Nyong’o admitted. That’s how Yoyo, an orange tabby feline, came into his life.

“This cat is not going anywhere. I guess the best anecdote for when you feel poorly cared for is to take care of something. “I took care of Yoyo and he opened my heart,” said the actress.
