An entire plot of deception and complicity has been revealed at the Police Clinic in Barranquilla, with the recent capture of a false doctor who operated under an invented name and title for more than two years at the healthcare center. The surprise spread even more when it was revealed that among those detained were two police officers, involved in the case.

The woman, who called herself Maira Alejandra Zapata, managed to infiltrate the institution, treating patients, prescribing medications and even handling emergency situations, all under a false identity. No one suspected her true identity until an oversight in a clinic bathroom revealed her deception: an ID with her photo, but with a different name.

Despite the warnings that subsequently emerged about the presence of the supposed doctor, she chose to disappear, while those responsible for her hiring, who reviewed her documentation and approved her contract, were arrested when their mistake became a crime.

The investigation, originated by complaints and carried out by the Attorney General’s Office and the Prosecutor’s Office, culminated in the recent arrests. The false doctor, who had managed to go unnoticed, was one of the targets of the arrests, along with those who, in some way, facilitated her entry and stay in the clinic.

Internal problems among clinic officials were key to bringing this farce to light, as well as administrative irregularities that caught the attention of those in charge of combating corruption. The lack of registration of “Dr. Maira” in the Single National Registry of Human Talent in Health, Rethus, was one of the points that raised suspicions and led to investigations.

Ultimately, the actions anticipated by the Police bore fruit with the arrests made, putting an end to a story of deception that affected both patients and medical professionals of the police institution.
