Strengthening the Pharmaceutical Sector

During his speech, Joel Hernández García, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the SRE, highlighted the efforts of the Federal Government to strengthen the pharmaceutical sector through interregional integration mechanisms between Latin America and the EU. He stressed that the lessons learned from the pandemic have been fundamental to design strategies that increase the manufacturing capacity of local and general-purpose medical supplies, through access to innovative products.

Alejandro Svarch Pérez, federal commissioner for Protection against Health Risks, highlighted the importance of international cooperation between governments and industries to improve access to health products. He indicated that self-sufficiency in health and the professionalization of personnel, supported by the Regional School of Health Regulation (ERRS), are essential to achieve the universalization of health in Mexico.

International cooperation

He ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium in Mexico, Johan Verkammen, urged to intensify the alliance between Mexico and the EU in the health sector. Belgium, occupying the presidency of the EU Council In the first half of 2024, it is a world leader in the export of pharmaceutical products, especially vaccines. Verkammen highlighted that cooperation between Mexico and the EU has been promoted through the Global Gateway Investment Strategy, identifying emblematic projects such as EU-LAC Partnership on vaccine production and resilience of health systems, with Cofepris as a key actor.

He Danish ambassador to Mexico, Kim Højlund Christensen, reaffirmed the solid collaboration between Mexico and Denmark in the health sector, emphasizing the mutual benefits of exchanges between both countries. He highlighted that Denmark, with an innovative and equitable health system, continues to successfully cooperate with Cofepris, strengthening the resilience of health systems through Global Gateway initiatives.

Participation and Collaboration

The event was attended by representatives of the pharmaceutical industry from Mexico, Belgium and Denmark, as well as officials from more than 20 countries from the diplomatic corps accredited in Mexico. Public-private collaboration is essential to expand development opportunities and guarantee access to affordable biotechnological medicines for the population.
