In a new interview with Daily Star (via NME), the singer of Sum 41 Deryck Whibley has stated that he wants to reunite with Jon Marshall, former frontman of the group.

The Canadian group, which is saying goodbye to the stage and gave its last English show at the Download Festival, had Marshall as singer for a short period of time, staying in the position for a year and leaving the group in 1997.

Whibley replaced him on vocals and now, in this talk, he explained that “Johnny Libertine”a song from his latest album ‘Heaven :x: Hell’was composed inspired by Marshall.

“We were 16 years old when we met him and he was in that delirium, without plan B, we destroyed everything. “He was my best friend, then he left the group and was never seen again.”

Deryck states that he has not had any contact with Marshall after his departure, stating that he would have liked to say goodbye well, explaining that he has not obtained “nothing at all” from his former partner over the years.

“I would like a ‘goodbye’“he said, noting that the most recent album was the band’s way of telling fans, after having announced in 2023 that they would break up after releasing their latest album and going on a world tour that will conclude in 2025.

We couldn’t make a better album to say goodbye” Whibley said of the album. “I want Sum 41 to stop at a time when everything around the group makes us happy…”

Of course, the music doesn’t stop and Whibley already has “other projects” that include writing songs. Even with everything, the vocalist affirms that the first thing he will think after giving his last concert with the band after 28 years will be: “What the hell am I going to do now?”.
