No. 12 Men’s Tennis Punches Ticket into UAA Semifinal Match with 5-1 Win over No. 27 Carnegie Mellon

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis men’s tennis team took down No. 27 Carnegie Mellon University, Thursday, April 25, to punch their ticket to tomorrow’s University Athletic Association (UAA) semifinal match.

With the quarterfinal win, WashU’s record sits at 12-9 on the season, while CMU’s record dipped to 6-10.

Doubles

WashU won two double matches to snag the 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Playing at No. 1 doubles, senior Gaurav Singh and sophomore Colin Fox welcomed the 8-4 win over Raghav Jangbahadur and Daniel Kong.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Eric Kuo and junior Scott Yamamoto dropped to close, 8-7 (7-3), match to Akshay Joshi and Derek Wong.

Singles

Sophomore Colin Scruggsplaying at No. 2 doubles, made quick work of Kong by utilizing the 6-4, 6-3 straight set sweep.

Singh spun the straight set, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory against Motaghedi at No. 3 singles. Singh’s win sealed the match for the Bears.

At No. 5 singles, graduate student Sergiu Celebidachi secured the 6-2, 6-2 sweep of Jonathan Gu.

With WashU already at five points, senior Jared Phillips (No. 1 singles), Kuo’s (No. 4 singles), and junior John Fakouri’s (No. 6 singles) matches were all abandoned.

The Bears will square off with No. 2 University of Chicago, tomorrow, Friday, April 25 in the UAA semifinal match. First serve from Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. is scheduled for 12:30 pm ET.
