The Federal Court of the Southern District of New York ruled this Friday a 14 year sentence prison for Álvaro Córdoba Ruizbrother of the late Senator Piedad Córdoba, for crimes related to drug trafficking.

The Prosecutor’s Office requested a minimum of 17 years in prison and the defense requested five years. It was Judge Lewis J. Liman who handed down the sentence, adding four years of supervised release.

Córdoba is specifically accused of conspire with various people and individuals associated with the FARC to obtain and distribute tons of cocaine bound for the United States.

Damian Williams, prosecutor in the case, announced the news saying that “Today’s sentence demonstrates the commitment of this Office to prosecute drug traffickers like Córdoba Ruíz, who seek to import tons of cocaine into the United States.

He also issued a strong warning to those who plan to sell drugs in the United States, “especially when they associate with violent drug trafficking organizations such as the FARC.”

Córdoba, who was extradited to the United States, after being captured in Medellín in February 2022, andHe faced accusations that included drug trafficking, illicit possession of firearms and alleged links to FARC dissidents.

It was last February when he had pleaded guilty to the crimes of which he was accused.

Notably The capture of Córdoba occurred within the framework of an anti-drug operation in which it is presumed that he was negotiating with key figures of the Gentil Duarte dissidents. His lawyers have suggested that his sister, Piedad Córdoba, could have been the target of the accusations.

The late Senator Piedad Córdoba, for her part, always defended her brother from the beginning of the case, refuting any connection with drug trafficking and denouncing alleged political persecution against him.
