Lamentable and depressing is the panorama recorded at the mouth of the Manzanares River next to Los Cocos beach in Santa Marta where there is a true ‘open-air garbage dump’ with shipwrecked wood and other solid waste.

In this spectacle of pollution, we can see tires, plastics, bottles, remains of old belongings, refrigerator shells, mattresses, motorcyclist helmets, tree branches, drowned animals and a variety of waste that the Manzanares River carries until it is carried to the sea, but Since they do not belong to that ecosystem, they come to the beach expelled by the waves.

There are many Samarians, residents and tourists who are outraged by the environmental deterioration not only of the water tributary that runs through several emblematic neighborhoods of Santa Marta but also by the direct impact on the ocean and therefore the beaches.

The solid waste, garbage and waste that some maladjusted and other irresponsible people throw into the rain runoff that then falls into the Manzanares River are a reflection of foolishness, lack of civility and true suffering to the environment.

“In a tourist city like Santa Marta, it is unacceptable that its most precious natural heritage, such as its beaches, is attacked. For this reason, it is urgent to apply a moral sanction and even a financial summons to the offenders and those who don’t give a damn. destroy the oldest city on the American continent,” said Roberto Hernández, who is a pensioner.

With the beginning of the winter season in this capital, there have been short-term downpours and precipitation, but the volume of water has caused flooding in the main avenues of Santa Marta, causing an impact on the mobility of automobiles since some taxis and buses of the collective public service are stranded on the roads.

During the rain, there are drivers who prefer to park in a specific area so as not to expose the vehicle to humidity or run the risk of going into a ditch, hole or getting trapped in a so-called ‘road trap’.

HUGE Puddles

On the route that from the Once de Noviembre neighborhood connects to the Santa Marta Public Market following Avenida del Libertador just after going down the Mamatoco bridge, a huge puddle forms, which forces drivers to reduce their speed to avoid splash other road actors.

On that same route, right in front of the Balcones del Libertador residential complex, there is a surface dam whose water level exceeds the road separator. And not to mention the ponded lagoon that occurs on Avenida de Los Estudiantes with the intersection of Avenida del Ferrocarril near the Ateneo Moderno school.

As is usual, every time it rains in Santa Marta, the sewage system collapses in the so-called critical points: streets 10 and 13 with Avenida del Ferrocarril, and in the historic center on Carrera 1 next to the Sociedad Portuaria parking lot, also in the 22nd Street (Santa Rita Avenue) with Carrera 1; on streets 23 and 26 in the Bellavista sector next to the Santa Marta club.
