More than 900 older adults gathered at the Duam Space

With the presence of Minister Julieta Corroza, an activity was developed with various healthy, recreational, cultural and awareness-raising proposals, as part of the World and Provincial Day of awareness of abuse and mistreatment in old age.

The Duam Space in the city of Neuquén was the scene of a day that brought together more than 900 older adults from all over the province, who enjoyed healthy, recreational, cultural, reflection, integration and awareness activities, as part of the World Day and Provincial awareness of abuse and mistreatment in old age, which is commemorated annually every June 15.

The Secretariat of Sports and Youth, through the provincial directorate of Older Adults, was in charge of promoting this proposal that took place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the presence of the Minister of Human Development, Local Governments and Women, Julieta Corroza; the Minister of Security, Matías Nicolini; the president of the BPN, Gabriel Bosco; the Secretary of Emergencies and Risk Management, Luciana Ortiz Luna; among other provincial authorities and representatives of civil society organizations.

The meeting was broadcast by Radio and Television of Neuquén (RTN), with the live performance of the program “Uniendo Pueblos”, which is broadcast from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., hosted by Verónica Viegas and Carlos Monsalve.

Minister Corroza highlighted that “this is a very important activity for the entire Government, headed by our governor Rolando Figueroa; and of course, for our entire ministerial team. The objective was to hold a great meeting to share, but especially to raise awareness about an issue that concerns us all, which is the mistreatment and abuse of older adults, and to make visible what we have been developing in terms of public policy.

Corroza pointed out that “the event was designed by the entire team of the provincial directorate of Seniors, headed by Silvia Elissetche, and the Secretariat of Sports and Youth, to bring various quality cultural proposals to the adults who came. to the Duam Space from different locations throughout the province.”

He maintained that “we have coordinated the assistance of ambulance teams, medical care, and a stand sector where, for example, the Ministry of Security provided information and tools to raise awareness about cyber scams and avoid being victims of them. There was also a public health stand with the vaccination center, among other areas of Government.”

The Secretary of Sports and Youth, María Fernanda Villone, pointed out that “it is essential to become aware of the importance of protecting and respecting the rights of older adults. As this date is commemorated, we want to highlight the commitment that the provincial government has to the protection and promotion of the rights of all people. Thanks to the policies that have been implemented, we are moving towards a more inclusive and respectful society.”

At the same time, he added that “from the Sports and Youth Secretariat, we believe that integration and active participation in society is essential for the well-being of our adults. On this day of reflection and integration, more than 800 people will have the opportunity to share experiences, learn and enjoy activities specially planned for them.”

Meanwhile, the provincial director of Older Adults, Silvia Elissetche celebrated the great turnout that this day of reflection and integration had. “The objective was to promote various actions that address the urgent need to protect and support older people, recognizing them as subjects with rights. Also, from our provincial leadership, we seek to encourage an inclusive and respectful vision with active participation in the society of senior members,” she said.

The day had older adults who arrived from Plaza Huincul, Chos Malal, Aguada San Roque, Picún Leufú, Santo Tomás, Piedra del Águila, Zapala, Octavio Pico, Centenario, Paso Aguerre, El Sauce, Ramón Castro, Los Catutos, Villa Picún Leufú Bridge, Vista Alegre, Senillosa, Plottier and Neuquén capital.

Accompanying Minister Corroza were the Secretary of Culture, Inclusion and Community Management, Miryan Abojer; the Undersecretary of Disability, Gustavo Iril; the Undersecretary of Women, Lorena Baranini; the vice president of Neuquén Cultural and Sports Enterprises (Ecydense), Federico Bolan; officials of the Sports and Youth Secretariats; of Culture, Inclusion and Community Management; and Gender.

Activities

In accordance with this year’s motto, “Older people in the spotlight of emergencies”, various activities and talks by exhibitors specialized in this topic were carried out.

The proposals were varied through awareness-raising, health, recreational and cultural spaces, where there was Zumba, workshops, physical education demonstrations, plays, live music and dance, among others.

The meeting had stands run by the teams of the ISSN, SIEN, BPN, Punto Saludable, Ministry of Security, among other areas of Government. Likewise, those present enjoyed musical presentations by the Police Band, the Neuquén Symphony Orchestra, and Marité Berbel. There were also performances by the Chos Malal Seniors group; the “Los Reyes” country music band; and the folklore ballet of the Cultural Patio.

World and Provincial Day of awareness of abuse and mistreatment in old age

The commemoration of the date is an initiative of the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness among the population about the treatment that older people receive.

The Inter-American Convention on the Protection of the Human Rights of Older Persons, created in 2015 and approved in Argentina through Law 27,360 in 2017, recognizes people aged 60 years or older as such.
