Health alarm in Cuba due to Oropouche and Dengue: informative note from MINSAP

The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed the complex health situation that exists in Cuba and that activates the alarms, due to the presence of the Oropouche virus and dengue.

In a note published in the last few hours, they reported that there is the presence of Oropouche virus in nine provinces and 23 municipalities of Matanzas, Mayabeque, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Holguín, Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos.

The diagnoses came from samples analyzed in the national reference laboratory of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK).

The well-known Dr. Francisco Durán, National Director of Epidemiology, assured that the identification of the cases was possible thanks to “the monitoring and surveillance actions of non-specific febrile syndromes.”

He assures that “all patients have evolved favorably, with improvement in symptoms between the third and fourth day of the onset of the disease.”

Oropouche fever: clinical picture, severity, treatment

Regarding the clinical picture of Oropouche Fever, he said that “it is mild, preceded by an incubation period of 5 to 7 days, which is characterized by fever, headaches, muscle and joint pain, sometimes vomiting and vomiting are also reported. diarrhea.”

“Associated with the virus, in a group of patients it is observed that on the sixth day a condition similar to the initial one appears – he noted – that does not leave sequelae and is not associated with the appearance of serious forms or deaths,” he added.

Likewise, he clarified that there is no specific treatment for the disease, only general measures to relieve symptoms. The specialist insisted on the importance of always going to the doctor in situations like those he describes.

Dengue in Cuba

In the case of denguethe National Director of Epidemiology reported that in recent weeks There is an increase in the incidence rate of suspected cases.

These are higher in the special municipality Isla de la Juventud and the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Holguín and Cienfuegos.

“Unlike Oropouche, the clinical picture of this disease can evolve into serious forms and cause death, which is why we insist on the need to go to the doctor in a timely manner,” he warned.

Dr. Durán recalled that both viruses are transmitted by mosquitoes, Dengue by Aedes aegypti and Oropouche Fever (OROV) by mosquitoes of the genus Culex and dipterans of the genus culicidae (Jejen culicoide). He recognized that this complicates the epidemiological panorama of Cuba and its control.

In essence, the expert asked Cubans to immediately go to the doctor if symptoms such as fever, headache, joint pain, general malaise, diarrhea, and vomiting appear. In addition, comply with the home or hospital admission measures as appropriate.

From the Ministry of Health, in the figure of Durán, they have also advised “supporting and carrying out own sanitation initiatives in homes, workplaces and their surroundings.”
