Holguín Provincial Medical Sciences Information Center celebrates 52 years of scientific management

The Provincial Information Center for Medical Sciences (CPICM) marks 52 years since it was created this June 25 as the main coordinator and promoter of scientific development in the province of Holguín, an important task that contributes to the management of innovative knowledge.

The creation of the CPICM has its origins in 1965, when the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) decided to create the National Information Center for Medical Sciences, due to the critical situation that existed in Cuba with biomedical information.

Already in 1969, the National Center decided that each of the provinces would create its own Center because the flow of information and the existing demands were greater, in addition, it was necessary to maintain and improve the few existing publications and organize a national network of libraries to centralize information materials in each territory.

This is how this Center emerged in 1972, at a time when there were only five libraries in some hospitals of the former Oriente Norte province, a historical evolution marked by improvement and perseverance that have given rise to the current management of 58 medical libraries at the length and breadth of the province of Holguín.

Although it is located within the University of Medical Sciences of Holguín (UCMHo), methodologically it is subordinated to the National Information Center for Medical Sciences.

Among its main functions, in addition to directing the province’s library network, it assumes the coordination of actions that guarantee information assurance in support of research plans, teaching and medical care.

Likewise, it plans together with the Municipal Reference Libraries, activities related to scientific information work and is responsible for the direction and coordination of information tasks and services of the libraries of the National Health Sciences Information System, belonging to the territory.

Their participation is essential in the identification of technical-professional improvement needs and in the design and execution of training activities. It even carries out the updating of national bases with the scientific productions of the province.

Thus, the CPICM offers specialized and differentiated information services to users with a high technical level and pays permanent attention to the programs and main health problems identified by the Minsap. At the same time, it uses information and communication technologies and promotes networking.

Today we cannot talk about the beginnings of the Medical Information System in the territory separated from the Provincial Center for Information of Medical Sciences, since its work in the development of the health system in Holguín is undeniable.
