Football has love stories worth writing. One of them refers to a selection of The Red who rejected Colo Colo to fulfill his dream: represent University of Chile.
That is the case of Rodrigo Echeverria. As a child, the El Bosque native refused to wear the white jersey even though Macul wanted to give him a scholarship. They gave him everything on a silver platter, but he saw life in blue.
This was revealed by his mother, Carmen Sáez, in conversation with MON. After César Vaccia received him at the University of Chile, a coach from the alba categories tried to convince him to take him to the opposite side.
“There was a coach from Colo Colo, I don’t remember his name, who accompanied us to the Metro and told me to take him to the Monumental (Stadium). They gave him a scholarship, they gave him everything, but my son said: ‘No, I’m from the U,’” he confessed.
“My father, who passed away ten years ago, always told him: ‘When you grow up, you have to be a footballer and famous,'” he added.
His match against Argentina
Along these lines, Rodrigo Echeverría’s mother told how she experienced the meeting between La Roja and Argentina. The midfielder was a starter and was praised for his notable performance in the Chilean midfield.
“This match was heart-stopping, I saw it with the batting tight. I thought: ‘There were already two goals that you missed, the third time is the charm.’ But unfortunately it didn’t come out,’ he concluded.
Meanwhile, his sister, Bárbara, is not surprised by what Rodrigo did against Argentina. “When he was little he knew that he was going to be a soccer player. He was super disciplined. He is younger than me but much more mature. I call him old boy,” he added.

Universidad de Chile’s next game will be against San Antonio Unidos. It will be played on Friday, June 28, from 5:00 p.m., at the Nicolás Chahuán Nazar Stadium.
