Forestry Worker’s Day was established on June 21, 1975. The celebrations for this date coincide with the first day of summer and the rainiest month in Cuba, when the plants are ready to be taken to the fields and planted. In these conditions they germinate much better.

The most common activities of the forestry worker are the planting, renewal and felling of timber trees, as well as erosion control, in addition to the generation, conservation and recovery of soil.

Our municipality of Calixto García is not prolific in these tasks, since there are not many forested areas, however there is a state forestry unit that is located in the town of Cruce de Maceo and that offers attention to the savannahs of Las Calabazas, Guayabo, Los Almácigos and the Manantiales hill.

There are also several farmers with farms dedicated to planting timber trees, among them Emiliano Serrano Cruz, one of the illustrious sons of Pozo Blanco, a neighborhood located two kilometers from Buenaventura.

“I was born here in August 1951, I am going to be 73 years old and I have always lived in this place, I worked with the state for more than half a century, in different jobs, the last of them as Head of the House of Combatants of the municipality, Five years ago I retired and came to the family farm, about five roses, which since it is not fertile land for various crops, I decided to cover it all with timber trees.”

Emiliano is a thin man, of average height, very happy and talkative, loved and respected by family, friends, neighbors and former colleagues at work and in military life. A man forged in good work, in hard work since childhood, fifth of a total of ten brothers, who had not yet turned sixteen and was already dressed in olive green, fulfilling his military service.

“When I was in Angola, where I spent two years, in addition to the memory of the family, the children in particular, I remembered the little farm, which is between that of the recently deceased friend Erasmo Ochoa, known as “Negro”, and that of Sergio Pintado, Well, there are many similar areas there, savannahs on hills, with many bushes.”

Applause for all those who, on farms, plots or patios, sow the seeds of any type of tree, fruit or timber, an action that protects the environment, offers us more oxygen and is a guarantee of health for the ecosystem, so mistreated in the past. recent times, by many governments and by the own hands of man.
