Fire: Garments unit damaged in Chinar Park fire | Kolkata News
Kolkata: A fire occurred at a garments unit in Chinar Park, Rajarhat on Saturday morning causing extensive damage to a hosiery factory and godown located on the terrace of a G+3-storey building that had been converted into an additional floor with a corrugated tin shed. No one was injured in the incident. While fire department is looking into what caused the fire, police and civic authorities are checking if the factory on the terrace was being legally operated. The fire was first spotted around 8 am on the top floor of the commercial building that has several other offices. The top floor, which was actually a terrace that had later been converted into a factory-cum-godown, had hosiery products that fueled the flames. Upon noticing the fire, locals alerted workers on the ground floor. While the 16-odd workers evacuated the building, residents from adjoining buildings also evacuated on their own. However, timely intervention by the fire brigade stopped the flames from spreading. Four fire tenders were deployed. Firemen used the rooftops of adjoining buildings to use the flames. The fire was brought under control in an hour and a half. Local TMC MLA Tapas Chatterjee arrived at the scene to assess the situation and oversee the response efforts. “The fire brigade’s intervention timely played a crucial role in preventing further escalation of the incident,” he said. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
