Mumbai: The Directorate Revenue of Intelligence (DRI) has apprehended Nitesh Devkar (30), the mastermind of gold smuggling ring. He has been on the run for the last one year. Devkar, was wanted by the DRI in connection with a case involving 3.5 kg of gold valued at Rs 2.35 crore, was arrested on Saturday. He was charged under the provisions of the Customs Act, presented before the holiday court, and subsequently sent to judicial custody.According to officials, Devkar’s involvement came to light following the DRI’s arrest of Saud Rahman Kurukar (25) and Jamal Mulla (58) , both hailing from Bhatkal, Karnataka, in May last year. Devkar’s role was to recruit young, fresh faces who would be less likely to attract the attention of security agencies. During questioning, the two accused revealed that Devkar had enticed them with financial incentives. tnn
