Summary of “House of the Dragon” 2×02

The chapter began with Aegon II’s fury after learning of the death of his son. He even fights with the person who seems to be the closest person to him at the moment: Criston Cole, he scolds him for not having been attentive to the protection of the princes and says he suspects everyone of possible betrayal. The voice of reason is provided by Otto Hightower, who suggests to his grandson that he make a funeral farewell for the murdered Jaehaerys. In this way, they will gain the support of those who doubt the legitimate claim to the Iron Throne, by making Rhaenyra look like a cruel person who is cruel to an infant.

Alicent Highwer and Princess Helaena participated in the farewell of the young prince, who mourned the child while the people cried: “Rhaenyra, the cruel one”, “Rhaenyra, the kingslayer”. The goal seemed to have been achieved.

Meanwhile, on Dragonstone, Rhaenyra learns of the murdered boy’s funeral walk and that the entire kingdom thinks she gave the order for his execution. She assures that because of the pain she felt when losing Lucerys, she would never do the same thing in any other way, least of all to Helaena, whom she does not consider responsible for what happened. Daemon confesses that he gave the instruction, although he defends himself by saying that he asked Aemond, and that the rat catchers took the initiative to kill the prince when they could not find the king’s brother. Rhaenyra bursts out and confesses to Daemon that she doesn’t trust him. This sparks a heated argument between the two and Daemon leaves. We won’t see him again during the entire episode.

Later, Rhaneyra holds two important meetings. The first with Baela, whom she sends to take her dragon Moondancer and go to Kingslanding. Eventually, Rhaneyra also receives Lady Mysaria, whom she frees to fulfill her house’s word.

On the other hand, Lord Larys announces that they arrested a gold cloak with the child’s head in a sack. The man confesses that he was hired by Daemon Targaryen and talks about the rat catchers who helped him. The king cuts off his head. And after that he makes the decision to hang all the rat catchers to put an end to the other person responsible who they failed to catch. This decision infuriates Otto Hightower.

Aegon II confesses to his grandfather that, in addition, Sir Criston Cole has sent Sir Arryk to kill Queen Rhaenyra by posing as her twin brother, Sir Erryk. Otto harshly criticizes the king on the throne and reminds him of King Viserys’ “dignity” and “patience.” After this, Aegon announces that he no longer wants him as the king’s hand and gives the position to Sir Criston Cole, who he says will be “a fist of steel.”

At the close of the episode, we see Sir Arryk successfully enter Rhaenyra’s fortress by pretending to be her twin brother. He enters the queen’s room to kill her, when suddenly Sir Erryk appears and starts a battle in which Sir Lorent will also intervene. In the end, Erryk kills his brother. After apologizing to the queen for what happened, he proceeds to commit suicide.

In this episode, we don’t see much of other characters. Aemond boasts when he knows that Daemon wanted to kill him and not Jaehaerys and celebrates because they are afraid of him. We also briefly see Hull siblings Alyn and Addam (Clinton Liberty). The latter, who appears for the first time in the season in this episode, asks his brother to take advantage of the sea serpent’s esteem for him.

Corlyn Velaryon also appears briefly in a bed argument with Princess Rhaenys in which they talk about Daemon and promise not to let Rhaenyra falter.

Criston Cole and Alicent Hightower.

The episode closes with one more tense scene between Alicent and Criston Cole. The king’s mother on the throne hits Criston when she finds out everything he has done behind her back, but they end up getting lost in a kiss and then in a scene of passion.
