The world event, considered the largest dedicated to these debates, will bring together from this Tuesday until Thursday more than a hundred people with disabilities, non-governmental organizations, representatives of civil society and diplomats at the UN headquarters in New York.

As a novelty, this year the event includes three round tables on current issues that will be incorporated into the Future Summit in September.

These will analyze the state of international cooperation in humanitarian emergencies, decent jobs and sustainable livelihoods, and technological innovations for an inclusive future.

In addition, it will dedicate space to promote technological innovation and transfer towards social inclusion and the empowerment of people with disabilities from classrooms to the workplace.

Since the adoption of the Convention in 2008, the Conference has met annually to monitor the implementation of the historic treaty signed by 191 United Nations Member States.

As its ultimate purpose, the meeting seeks to ensure that countries keep their word for equality for all.

The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 13, 2006 and opened for signature on March 30, 2007.

Since then, it has become a broad human rights instrument, signaling a paradigmatic change in attitudes and approaches towards people with disabilities.

Its purpose includes promoting, protecting and ensuring the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, as well as promoting respect for their inherent dignity.
