With numerous activities scheduled for this Sunday, May 5, the International Book Fair promises diversity. In addition to free talks for those who visit the La Rural property in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo, there will be international visits and a tribute dedicated to the writer María Kodama, who died in March 2023.
Below is a review of some notable events from today’s programming.
1. Monica Ojeda. The Ecuadorian writer, who has just launched her book Electric shamans at the sun festival by Random House, will be present at the Fair. She will do so accompanied by the writers Gabriela Cabezón Cámara and Dolores Reyes to talk about that publication starting at 4 p.m. in the Adolfo Bioy Casares room. When finished, the author will sign copies at the Penguin Random House stand.
2. Tribute to María Kodama and presentation of story of the nightby Jorge Luis Borges. Starting at 4 p.m., the Jorge Luis Borges Foundation announced a tribute to María Kodama, which will take place in the Tulio Halperín Dongui room of La Rural, located in the Yellow Pavilion. During the event, the recent edition of the book will also be presented story of the nightof Jorge Luis Borgesreleased by Sudamericana.
3. Mariana Enriquez. The Argentine author will present her recent book A sunny place for gloomy peoplefrom the hand of the writer Juan Mattio. It will be from 5 p.m., in the José Hernández room of the Red Pavilion.
4. How to transmit recent history to new generations of readers. With the support of Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, this meeting will have the participation of the coordinator of Comics for Identity (National Library) Judith Gociol and Sabrina Gullino Valenzuela Negro (illustrator), Analia Argento and Mariana Zaffaroni Islands, authors of the book The grandchildren tell you how it was (Marea Editorial). With the researchers and with the presence of grandchildren recovered by the organization, the guests will tell how books on identity and memory intended for new generations are made. The event will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Future Zone space of the Yellow Pavilion.
5. Dialogue of Writers from Latin America. Table II: Evasion plan. The creation of possible worlds in the face of adverse situations. This public conversation will take place from 5:30 p.m. Carol Rodrigues (Brazil), Leandro Ávalos Blacha (Argentina), Alina Gadea will participate (Peru) with the moderation of Marisol Alonso. Organized by the El Libro Foundation, the chosen place is the Alfonsina Storni room.
6. Presentation of the collection Petit’s adventuresby Isol, Fernando Salem and Bernardita Ojeda. How did Petit’s character go from the book to animation and then back to the comic book? That will be the focus of this activity, announced as a “participatory” and “for the whole family” meeting. The illustrator and writer Isol and Fernando Salem will be present, as well as Judith Wilhelm, from Calibroscopio Ediciones. The activity is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Carlos Gorostiza room of the Yellow Pavilion.
7. Felipe Pigna. The Argentine historian will present his classic Myths of Argentine history which now arrived in a brand new anniversary edition. He will do it starting at 7 p.m., in the José Hernández room, accompanied by Nino Ramellaas announced by Editorial Planeta, organizer of the event.
General information
On Saturdays and Sundays the Book Fair is open from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. General admission costs 5 thousand pesos. Admission, meanwhile, is free every day for children under 12 years of age, teachers, people with disabilities and those who have the Cultural Pass.
“Each visitor who purchases a ticket (for any day) or pass (for three visits) will receive a checkbook of $4,000 to use in participating bookstores once the Fair ends. Each ticket will also be accompanied by discount vouchers that can be used to purchase books at the Fair stands,” the event organizers reported and added: “Tickets of $5,000 and The passes will have 5 $1,000 vouchers. Each voucher of $500 or $1,000 can be used to cover up to 10% of the payment on purchases of $10,000 or more. The vouchers are cumulative, for example: for the purchase of a $20,000 book, you can deduct $2,000 in two $1,000 vouchers.
