A doctor who graduated from the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Rosario, Sebastián del Pazo, since this year, took on the challenge of guiding as dean the academic unit with the most careers and the most students of the Catholic University of Santa Fe.

“We want to train people who take care of people,” with these words Dr. Sebastián del Pazo addressed those present, in his swearing-in ceremony as dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Catholic University of Santa Fe. Medical Clinic specialist doctor was surrounded by colleagues, friends, family and authorities of the House and the city. His appointment as head of the academic unit is for three years.
A doctor who graduated from the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Rosario, Sebastián del Pazo this year took on the challenge of guiding as dean the academic unit with the most careers and the most students at UCSF.
Train by example
In a speech full of emotion, the dean recalled his ten years of teaching at this House of Studies, a role that his grandfather and uncle had also played.
Referring to the request for closeness and listening made days ago by Monsignor Fenoy to the authorities of this House, he expressed: “I offer my closeness and my listening: to the students in the first place, to my colleagues who make up the management team of the Faculty, to the directors and coordinators of the different careers; to the authorities of this University. And please, demand respectful closeness from me, demand attentive listening from me.”
Given the enormous challenge that joining the leadership team of this Faculty entails, he confidently stated: “We train future professionals who will take care of people’s health. Professional kinesiologists, pharmacists, nutritionists, speech therapists, obstetricians, graduates in psychomotor skills, food safety or gerontology. We want to train people who take care of people. Let them be close and listen to them, in the belief that it is the best way to reach an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.”
Regarding the responsibility that the University has in training in values, del Pazo asked to set an example because “our young people need leadership. And we can give the example from the kind and efficient attention in the bedelias, the generosity in the transmission of knowledge, the efficiency of our management processes, the fair demand when evaluating what has been learned. They will be better professionals to the extent that they are better people.”
Finally, he did not skimp on his gratitude to all the people who helped him, guided him in his vocation and accompanied him on this path. “And a final thank you to the management team of the Faculty, from whom I learn every day, with whom we are saddened by the mistakes and rejoiced by the successes and with whom we will face the challenges to come.”
Demand and commitment
In his speech, the rector of the University, Mgtr. Lic. Eugenio Martín De Palma thanked the commitment assumed by the new dean. “The task will be arduous, but, with the help of God, your dedication and daily responsibility and the collaboration of your entire team, I am sure that it will be completed completely. Therefore, with the purpose that the faculty under your charge grows even more, in number of members and excellence, with the imprint of the ‘magis’ Ignatian in your DNA, you have been entrusted with this beautiful task.”
Regarding the demands of this new position, he reminded him that “every moment and time has its opportunity and its difficulty. They are two sides of the same coin. I understand that the opportunity lies in the vigor and strength of this young, but great academic unit that you have to lead; And I see its difficulty in how this significant and sudden growth often forces us to deal with what is urgent and not what is important, where those of us who have the responsibility of the government, many times, must also bear the burden. ‘our weak shoulders’, not only our weaknesses but also the weaknesses over those of us who exercise government. This requires us to have a lot of empathy and love for our neighbors.”
Finally, he thanked del Pazo for his genuine commitment to the institution and its mission, making “hopes that all your objectives are met and that they can be carried out in a climate of institutional harmony.”
At the service of the human person
In turn, Dr. Armando De Feo, president of the University’s Board of Directors, delved into the challenge initiated in 2012 by the Faculty of Health Sciences, and what this means for this new management, based on the results ” that today we see realized.” “It is a challenge that remains valid, that demands and challenges us in approaching the different disciplines linked to Health and that has in the Medicine career a direction to follow without failing to highlight the greatness of what has been done so far nor the significance of to be able to intervene in the Catholic formation of all the necessary actors in this scientific dimension.”
Likewise, he asked everyone present to “honor every day having been born as a university from the very heart of the Church, to be part of it and to have a very worthy mission to fulfill: to achieve a level of prestige, recognition and appreciation by committing ourselves evangelically to the transformation of the world.” and at the service of the human person, which is our mission, growing as a university community.”
Finally, he offered those present a reflection on the mission of the University and the Faculty of Health Sciences in particular, focused on “pursuing the training and promotion of health from the perspective of a totalizing human vision inserted in its environment.” and in society, instilling responsibility in the student, not only in its professional but also social and personal dimension, and encouraging the development of the critical and creative spirit, in an environment that promotes participation and responsibility.”
The faculty
The Faculty of Health Sciences began its activity in 2012, with Nursing and Bioimaging courses. Shortly after, the careers of Speech Therapy, Nutrition, Gerontology, Obstetrics, Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy and Pharmacy were added. Recently, the Bachelor’s Courses in Food Safety and Psychomotor Skills were also incorporated. Today it is the UCSF Faculty with the largest number of students, exceeding the number of entrants year after year.
Del Pazo assumes leadership of the Faculty, after the management of Dr. Daniel Vicens, who in turn held that position, succeeding Dr. Guillermo Kerz at the beginning in 2012. Today the Faculty is present in 4 of the 6 locations it has. the University in the country, to which it also adds virtual courses.
