The entity that ensures environmental conservation carries out the cleaning of the 16 kilometers of the Manzanares River with special emphasis on the lower part of the basin.
With the purpose of contributing to the protection of the Manzanares River, the Magdalena Regional Autonomous Corporation (Corpamag) contracted hydraulic works in the different basins with emphasis on the mouth in the Los Cocos beach sector.
The works that are carried out by the Aguas Santa Marta consortium consist of mechanical dredging of sediments, embankment with selected material, slopes to control the erosive processes that affect the riverbed and a reforestation program with endemic species of the Manzanares River basin. in its lower area.
Corpamag advances in the execution of technical works and environmental education processes for the recovery of the Manzanares River and Quebrada Japon, in the district of Santa Marta.
For a year now, activities have been carried out on three fronts: One in the Perehuetano neighborhood, where gabions were built to stabilize slopes; another in the Nueva Mansión neighborhood, carrying out the cleaning of the vegetation layer with a backhoe and manual cleaning, and finally a work front in the Palinca sector where mechanical removal of sediments is carried out.

It is worth remembering that in Quebrada Japon, the work on the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino Museum was completed with the construction of the discharge chamber that delivers water to the Manzanares River. In addition, a box culvert was made, which involved carrying out excavations and fillings to form the second transportation channel of the channel in order to expand the hydraulic capacity, reduce the water transportation time, and facilitate drainage in the tributary areas.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Within the framework of technical works, Corpamag carries out education and environmental awareness days in the different neighborhoods that surround it with the aim of enlivening the sense of belonging and increasing citizen culture.
For this reason, workshops and community visits have been developed in different neighborhoods such as La Tenería, Manzanares, Costa Verde, Minuto de Dios, Villa Alejandría Urbanization, Perehuetano, Villa del Carmen I, II and III, Salamanca, Simón Bolívar, Las Malvinas, among others. others, sectors where actions aimed at caring for the tributary are promoted.
This education strategy includes the formation of community groups called the ‘Guardians of the River’, made up of children, youth and community leaders, who receive training to become environmental multipliers.
