A young indigenous man from the municipality of Íquira, Huila, was apparently murdered by dissident groups that commit crimes in that department.

Is about José Rafael Meza Rivera, 20 years old, belonging to the Nasa Huila Rionegro reservation, who has a brother who is part of the Army, which, possibly, would have provoked the attack against him since he received 4 gunshot wounds to various parts of his body.

The authorities confirmed that the attack occurred this weekend in the jurisdiction of the Nasa Huila Rionegro reservation, in Íquira, where armed men belonging to the ‘Ismael Ruiz’ front of the dissidents broke in.

“The young man was traveling on his motorcycle and was intercepted and attacked with firearms,” the authorities stated, adding that there were death threats against the indigenous man due to the fact that he had a brother in the Army.

The violent action was rejected by the association of traditional authorities of the Regional Indigenous Council of Huilawhich recalled that on October 4 of last year the leader Víctor Baicué Finscué was also assassinated.

“We indigenous peoples have been systematic victims of violations of the human rights through displacement, homicides and threats,” the organization said.

He added that “we strongly reject the presence of armed groups in the indigenous territories affiliated to the organization, as well as the victimization of indigenous community members.”
