Information note on strong and intense rains in Cuba

The Cuban Meteorological Institute issued an information note due to the intense rains in the western region.

The report, published this June 14, 2024 at 11:00 pm, indicates that during the last twenty-four hours numerous rainfalls, showers and thunderstorms have been recorded in the western region of the island.

The rain became strong and intense in some locations in the territory. According to information offered, in the rain gauge network of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, significant accumulations greater than 100 millimeters were reported in 14 locations.

Of them, 6 exceeded 150 millimeters, these are the locations:

• Tele-mail Catalina de Güines, in Güines, Mayabeque – 185.0 mm
• Tele-mail, in Dimas Mantua, Pinar del Río – 163.2 mm
• Güines Aqueduct, in Güines, Mayabeque – 161.5 mm
• Wajay Tele-mail, in Boyeros, Havana – 157.3 mm
• Tele-mail Vereda Nueva, in Caimito, Artemisa – 155.0 mm
• Laguna de Piedra Reservoir, in Artemisa, Artemisa – 152.8 mm

Heavy rains in Cuba due to high altitude troughs

According to the Forecast Center, the precipitation is related to a high-altitude trough located in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.

This phenomenon, in combination with the proximity of a low pressure center on the surface to the northeast of the Florida peninsula, which generated a warm and humid southerly flow, causes bad weather over western Cuba.

Therefore, the forecast is that favorable conditions will continue so that during the afternoon and night this system will maintain showers, rains and thunderstorms in the western region of Cuba, which can be strong and intense in some locations.

Insmet states on its official website that June is the second month of the rainy period in Cuba and is, on average, the rainiest of the year in the country.

Likewise, in the sixth month of the year, rain occurs associated with diurnal warming that is generally accompanied by thunderstorms. Their period of great activity begins in June, although it does not begin simultaneously in all regions of the country.
