Implementation of the Life Task advances in Morón – Televisión Avileña

With one of the areas of prioritized attention defined at the country level, the municipality of Morón, in the province of Ciego de Ávila, maintains as a priority the execution of the Cuban State Plan to Confront Climate Change (Tarea Vida), with the purpose of reducing vulnerabilities in future scenarios.

The Master of Science Zulima Díaz Montes, main specialist of the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in that town, highlighted the responsibility they assume when implementing mitigation and adaptation actions to climate change (CC) in the northern keys of Ciego de Avila, an area with valuable natural resources and importance for the development of tourism.

Among the tasks carried out during the seven years of the Life Task, the dumping of sand that favored the recovery of more than 10 kilometers of beaches distributed between the Guillermo, Coco and Paredón Grande keys stood out; in addition to the execution of a project to rehabilitate coastal dunes in Jardines del Rey.

These actions make important contributions to the preservation of the ecosystem by reducing erosion in coastal areas and the risks of damage due to the probable occurrence of extreme hydrometeorological events.

Díaz Montes represented the project dedicated to reestablishing the sand mounds, led by the Center for Environmental Engineering and Biodiversity (Ciba) and as part of which technical actions have been developed such as the planting of native plants and the extraction of other invasive exotics.

This initiative also ventures into the training of workers in hotel, non-hotel and tourism support facilities, with the aim of providing knowledge for efficient management of coastal ecosystems and increasing the perception of risks associated with CC.

The Principal Specialist of Citma in the territory of Morón alluded to the strength represented by the execution in Jardines del Rey of an international project that promotes sustainable tourism, aimed at integrating the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and the mitigation of CC in vulnerable marine-coastal areas, through the design and establishment of innovative models with strengthened capacities and financial mechanisms.

In the coastal community of Manatí, belonging to the Turiguanó Popular Council, they also benefit from a collaboration project that contributes to creating technical and human capacities, under the advice of the Coastal Ecosystem Research Center (Ciec) and the Iris Climate Foundation, with the objective of facing adverse scenarios in the medium and long terms.

Added to this are efforts to protect more than 15 thousand hectares of mangrove forests, as a guarantee to preserve biodiversity in marine-coastal ecosystems and to protect against natural disasters, due to the capacity of these green spaces to reduce the impact of waves and the strong winds.

Likewise, efforts are aimed at protecting the Great Northern Wetland of Ciego de Ávila, with international relevance endorsed by the status of a Ramsar Site, therefore, the sustainable use of natural resources in that area is considered, where different economic activities are carried out. and social, with the influence of numerous organizations and institutions.

In the effort to safeguard this gigantic ecosystem, the work of the environmental education project Esperanza con Alas y Colores stands out, deserving of the Territorial Environmental Recognition, awarded during the celebrations for World Environment Day.

Among the main goals, he referred to continuing with the change in the energy matrix due to the importance of preserving the environment and in the economic and social spheres, with the incentive represented by the recent implementation of a photovoltaic solar park with technology donated by the People’s Republic of China.

Demonstration of the will to progress is also the commitment of the workers of the Renewable Energy Sources Company RENSOL to develop a solar grain dryer, an innovation that would imply considerable electricity savings and would guarantee energy sovereignty to execute this industrial process.

In order to ensure the continuity of the Life Task, Morón conceived 18 actions for the current year, in which Ciba and Ciec, the provincial representations of the Ministries of Tourism and Agriculture, as well as the national Institutes of Hydraulic Resources, intervene. and Territorial and Urban Planning, to which are added the efforts of the Provincial Flora and Fauna Company, the Municipal University Center and the local Education and Housing directorates.
