The Provincial Health Directorate in Santiago de Cuba reported this Tuesday the confirmation of cases of Oropouche Fever in several health areas of the main municipality, and also in Bahía Blanca, belonging to Guamá, and in Palmarito, in Mella.

As part of the process of actively searching for febrile cases in the province, an increase in reports of non-specific febrile syndromes was evident in the aforementioned health areas, indicated the note published on Facebook.

The text emphasized that this disease has been known for six decades, and “there have been no reports of deaths from it.”

However, the note signed by the Provincial Health Directorate in Santiago de Cuba did warn that “there could be cases with certain severity based on comorbidities, or characteristics of each individual.”

In addition, he reported that this Wednesday a press conference would be held at the General Directorate of Public Health, on “the update of the epidemiological situation in relation to Oropouche Fever, Dengue and PAMI strategies regarding the same.”

The information comes at a crucial moment, since in the province of Santiago de Cuba, complaints on social networks indicate an alarming increase in corpses in funeral homes, with alerts that mention up to 29 people dead in a single day.

From the confirmation of the presence of the Oropouche virus in Santiago de Cuba last May, the disease has affected the population, and it is suspected that has claimed at least one victimalthough the authorities have not yet officially confirmed this information.

However, the health situation in the province is becoming more complicated with the confirmation of the circulation of two dengue serotypeswhich could cause complicated clinical symptoms.

The Provincial Department of Surveillance and Vector Control recently launched an alert regarding the presence of two variants of the virus that causes the dengueat times when “the territory has a high infestation of the transmitting agent”, mainly in the main municipality, Palma Soriano, Contramaestre, Mella and San Luiswhere more cases of arbovirus are reported.
